VAT Calculator
Add VAT to a net price or strip it out of a gross price. Pick a country for its standard rate or enter your own, and see net, VAT, and gross at once.
How VAT is calculated
VAT is a percentage added to the net price of goods and services. Adding and removing it are not the same operation, which is where most mistakes happen.
Add: gross = net × (1 + rate / 100)Remove: net = gross / (1 + rate / 100)VAT = gross - netStandard rates differ by country: the Netherlands is 21% (with 9% and 0% reduced rates), Germany 19%, the UK 20%, Belgium 21%, and France 20%. Choose a country to fill the standard rate, or type a reduced or custom rate yourself.
Gross prices by country
A net amount with VAT added at the standard rate for each country, giving the gross price you would charge or pay.

| €50 | €60.50 | €59.50 | €60.00 |

Frequently asked questions
How do I add VAT to a price?
Multiply the net amount by 1 plus the rate as a decimal. For 21% VAT, multiply by 1.21, so €100 net becomes €121 gross, of which €21 is VAT.
How do I remove VAT from a gross price?
Divide the gross amount by 1 plus the rate. To strip 21% from €121, divide by 1.21 to get €100 net, leaving €21 of VAT. You cannot simply subtract 21% of the gross.
What are reduced VAT rates?
Many countries apply lower rates to essentials such as food, books, or medicine. The Netherlands uses 9% and 0% alongside the 21% standard rate, so pick the rate that matches the goods or service.
What is reverse charge VAT?
On many cross-border business-to-business sales the buyer accounts for VAT instead of the seller, who invoices without it. This calculator handles standard domestic VAT, not reverse charge.
Why can't I just subtract the rate to remove VAT?
Because VAT was added to the net amount, not the gross. Subtracting 21% of €121 gives €95.59, which is wrong. Dividing €121 by 1.21 gives the correct €100 net.
