How It Works

Pace is time per unit of distance, usually minutes per kilometer or minutes per mile. Speed is distance per hour. A faster pace has a smaller time value, while a faster speed has a larger number.

Pace = total time divided by distance
Finish time = distance multiplied by pace
Distance = total time divided by pace

FAQ

How can I improve my running pace?

Build consistent easy mileage first, then add one or two focused workouts each week such as tempo runs, intervals, or hill repeats. Recovery days help those workouts work.

What are negative splits?

Negative splits mean running the second half faster than the first half. They help many runners avoid starting too fast and fading late in a race.

How should I pace a marathon?

A marathon usually rewards even effort. Start controlled, protect your early energy, and use long-run practice to confirm the pace you can hold.

Is pace or speed better?

Runners usually use pace because it maps directly to race splits. Speed is useful for treadmill settings, cycling comparisons, and broader training analysis.

Why do GPS watches show different paces?

GPS can drift around buildings, turns, trees, and track curves. Use lap averages or measured routes when exact pace matters.
