How the tip is worked out

The tip is a percentage of the bill, and the total is the bill plus that tip. Splitting divides the total evenly so everyone covers the same share of both.

Tip = bill × (percentage / 100)Total = bill + tipPer person = total / number of people

Common tip levels are 15%, 18%, and 20%, which is why those are preset buttons. For anything else, drag the slider to set a custom percentage.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I tip?

In the US, 15 to 20% of the pre-tax bill is standard for table service. In much of Europe a smaller tip or simply rounding up is normal because service is often included, so check the local custom.

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is the common convention. Tipping on the post-tax total is a little more generous and also fine; this tool applies the percentage to whatever bill amount you enter.

How does splitting the bill work here?

The tool adds the tip to the bill, then divides the total by the number of people, so each person pays an equal share of both the bill and the tip.

Do I tip when service is already included?

If a service charge already appears on the bill you usually do not need to add more, though rounding up for great service is common. Check the receipt for a service or gratuity line.

Is tipping expected everywhere?

No. Norms vary widely, from expected in the US to rare in places like Japan. When traveling, a quick check of local etiquette avoids over or under tipping.
